![]() ![]() We love magic and science-fiction in equal measure, and as much as we love experiencing rich stories and worlds through games, we won’t ignore the real-world context in which those games are made. Inverse will never punch down, but we aren’t afraid to punch up. We care deeply about a game’s design, world-building, character arcs, and storytelling. ![]() INVERSE VIDEO GAME REVIEW ETHOS: Every Inverse video game review answers two questions: Is this game worth your time? Are you getting what you pay for? We have no tolerance for endless fetch quests, clunky mechanics, or bugs that dilute the experience. Lime Odyssey is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG from Aeria Games. Inverse reviewed the game on PlayStation 4. One Piece Odyssey is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Just prepare for inclement weather throughout the journey to get there. If you’re a super fan that wants to experience the Straw Hats’ latest adventure no matter what, you will likely be satisfied by the ending. The long wait to get to the meat of the story and a genuine challenge makes it difficult to recommend to others, even fans. So much so that, upon first meeting, they steal the powers of the Straw. That’s not saying much in a consistently underwhelming subgenre, though. It isn't long before they meet two original characters: Lim and Adio, who have an understandably deep distrust of pirates. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the best anime game ever made. Some publications call One Piece Odyssey the best One Piece game ever made. If it started with that energy, I would’ve rated it higher. One Piece Odyssey ended on a sweet note with me. It’s even worse because the slowest parts of the story happen in the beginning, where the game should’ve ideally hooked in players instead of dragging them along. ![]() Navigate to the Map tab by pressing R1 or L1 on Playstation. To navigate between large regions, simply follow these steps: Open the game’s menu. The story and the characters aren’t the problem, though. The One Piece Odyssey Yoisa Fast Travel system allows you to navigate between the world’s regions, as well as between areas within the same region. Their interactions with the Straw Hats lead them to evolve over the course of the story, which ties into a bittersweet knot at the end - even if players could argue about whether or not they are “good” characters. The two original characters, Lim and Adio, don’t feel particularly unique personality-wise but have believable motives. To its credit, this adventure feels straight out of the anime or manga. With Lim’s help, they overcome past hardships and regain their strength while a bigger “storm” looms over Waford. They run into a girl named Lim who steals their powers, which can only be reclaimed by defeating the island’s guardians and venturing into their past memories. Fans from both worlds will adore it, and I found it to be a perfect appetiser as I await The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom later this year. One Piece Odyssey strands the Straw Hats on the island of Waford after a storm shipwrecks them on shore. This is a distinctive, appealing example of the JRPG genre that also nails the essence of the One Piece universe. Its overall theme is an examination of the nature of friendship, although thankfully, it’s too funny and bizarre to ever become twee. That feels at odds with the game’s general vibe of naivety and sweetness, which at times treads the sort of territory occupied by the Zelda and Ni no Kuni games. One Piece Odyssey isn’t perfect: it takes a while to hit its stride, and it’s hard to ignore the scantily clad, anatomically unfeasible presentation of two of its female characters. It introduces a welcome, fresh strategic element to what could otherwise have felt overfamiliar. The game divides its battlefields into areas, giving characters close-up and ranged special attacks that can be applied to a single enemy, or several. Luffy has a body made from rubber, so he can launch barrages of punches on distant enemies, or extend an arm to reach inaccessible areas, or catapult enemies across the battlefield. This narrative conveniently allows you to build up your characters from scratch, shaping them to a large extent, and one of One Piece Odyssey’s strengths is that the characters’ signature abilities feed into both battling and puzzle-solving. Swiftly realising that Luffy and co aren’t like other pirates (they’re too nice, for one thing), she then helps them to regain those powers via epic quests set in recognisable places from the One Piece canon, reconstructed from the crew’s memories. Main character Luffy and his motley band of Straw Hat Pirates are marooned on the mysterious island Waford, deprived of their powers by local resident Lim. Story-wise, in keeping with the comics, it’s bonkers. ![]()
